I arrived in Nashville last Tuesday to the cheers and hugs of my old friends Will & the Won’ts with the new addition of The Sante Fe Femme Fiddle Korina Wilson, who they coaxed into joining the tour. We had a wonderful time in Nashville, especially at The Basement, where W&TW rocked some faces at New Faces Night as well as an ASCAP Showcase on Wednesday night.
The talent of the town is amazing, but just as one can grow tired of a fine wine after overexposure we found ourselves seeking something unique and personable. Printer’s Alley was food for our souls: real people playing real music in a dank old alleyway. Oh me. Oh my. We jived!
On Saturday we set our sights on Erie, Pennsylvania, driving ten grueling hours from Nashville. We learned that OHIO IS A TIME WAAAAARP, although Cincinnati was quite beautiful to pass through, with its forested hills and impressive skyscrapers. When we arrived at our magnificent lake house abode, the harvest moon shined down the truth that every hardship has its reward, and the long trip became TOTALLY worth it.
Erie is the hometown of W&TW’s drummer, Andrew Bilotti, a hilarious, fun loving man and an excellent drummer. With it being so, he took it upon himself to set up all of our performances and accommodations (we are staying in his friend’s family lake house) and has acted as our tour guide, which included all of the places he has eaten, celebrated, educated, defecated, and fornicated. You will see photos of him in this series of photos reenacting his days as a boy “storming the beach at Normandy”, as well as Will, Gui, and Matt throwing rocks into the watery abyss with Korina looking hopelessly on thinking “what have I gotten myself into”.
Lake Erie is for all intensive purposes, a sea. A powerful, ebbing and flowing sea with all the intimidating, awe-full power of any ocean. It is a wonderful landscape for us all to connect with each other and relax into the enjoyment of simply being alive.
After exploring Erie and the Peninsula yesterday, we set up all the musical gear in the living room and I taught the band my tunes. It was a WONDERFUL experience hearing my songs come through a BIG beautiful band again. Its been over a year and a half since we played together in L.A. sans Gui and Korina. We will be playing 2 shows in Erie in the next week. One at PACA on Tuesday and one at the Erie Ale House on Saturday. If you know anyone in the area, send em on over. Peace and Blessings on your journeys!
